Fire detection in recycling plants: how AI prevents scalding fires

Recycling plants face unique risks when it comes to fire safety. The presence of materials such as paper, metal, plastic and electronics, combined with dust and heat generation, create situations where scalding fires can form undetected. Traditional detection systems often respond too late or are not suitable for these challenging environments. AI-driven fire detection provides an effective solution to detect these risks early.

The risk of scalding tires in recycling environments

Incendiary fires often arise from chemical reactions of materials, and can be amplified by batteries that inadvertently end up among the trash. Because these fires develop slowly and build up inside material accumulations, they are difficult to detect with conventional detectors. By the time smoke reaches the detectors or flames are visible, the fire is often well developed.

How do you detect scalding?

Fire arising from scalding is easy to detect with a thermal imaging camera because it occurs on the surface. However, scalding does not occur on the surface but inside a pile of waste. A thermal imaging camera detects surface temperature and therefore cannot see inside the pile. Incubation can indeed cause an increase in temperature at the surface over time, but this is not necessarily noticeable among all the natural surface hotspots, such as solar heating and reflection. What is detectable is the smoke that escapes from the mountain in which there is scalding. This smoke is detectable through visual cameras trained by ai smart software. This therefore makes scalding detectable at once before it is a surface fire.

Ai minimizes false positives

Sensor Partners uses visual cameras combined with thermal cameras and smart software in the SmartProtect Fire system to detect anomalous temperature trends and smoke before an actual fire occurs. To recognize fire at a very early stage, it is important to detect minimum temperature. SmartProtect Fire detects from 65°C. Smart software determines whether a detection is worthy of an alarm or whether it is, for example, an innocent sun reflection, or an employee standing around cutting or welding. Pure monitoring from 65°C.

Benefits for recyclers

  • Early detection of fire risk: As low as 65°C detect hot spots, allowing preventive measures to be taken before fire develops.
  • Real-time monitoring: Operators receive immediate notification with associated images so that quick action can be taken.
  • Few false alarms: The intelligent nature of the Ai distinguishes between harmless temperatures and real risks, resulting in fewer false alarms.
  • Smoke detection in outdoor locations: Unlike smoke detectors, SmartProtect Fire functions in outdoor environments
  • Brood Detection: through smoke analysis, scalding is detected.

A hands-on solution

Sensor Partners provides custom fire detection solutions for the recycling industry. Our systems are designed for 24/7 monitoring of critical areas such as warehouses, sorting lines and conveyors. By deploying AI technology, we offer a reliable system that helps detect scalding fires early and prevent damage, downtime or even evacuations.
