Chemical resistance and sensors

The manufacturing industry works with all kinds of chemicals on a daily basis. Industrial applications where these chemicals are present require extra attention. With this in mind, it is important to realise that average or regular sensors can be unfit to operate with these chemicals. But, it can be crucial to have a sensor in these applications. That's where sensors with chemical resistance come in.
In this article we discuss a number of sensors that are equipped with a chemical resistance.
PAY ATTENTION! With each application and situation the chemical reaction as well as the functionality of the sensors could be diverse. That is why we always recommend not to act without the supervision and consultation of a qualified expert.
Sensors, but also all the related ones must be carefully chosen for proper use. That means looking at sensors, cables and accessories. After all, chemicals can have a corrosive effect here. To make sensors workable against chemicals, they are equipped with special housings and materials. Take a look at the below sensors with chemical resistance:
microsonic provides a numer of series specifically designed for use in environments that contain (corrosive) chemicals. Firstly, there is the crm+ series which is an altered version of the mic+ and is equipped with a stainless steel housing and a teflon film over the transducer. The pico+TF series is a special version of the regular pico+ series in that it has a plastic housing and a teflon film over the transducer. In addition, there is the hps+ series which, in addition to chemical resstiance, is also equipped with a special pressure resistance that allows reliable measurements in a tank with changing (air) pressure. More about it here.

Inductive proximity switches from the FME/FMM/FMK/FMT series of Micro Detectors are equipped with a full-metal housing (316L stainless steel) which provides a raised chemical resistance. In addition, these sensors have an impact resistance and IP68/IP69K sealing degree.
The laser distance sensors from the LAM series are equipped with an ATEX-compliant Ex d housing of 316L stainless steel. It is not only chemical-resistant to a certain degree (see the table below this article) but also prevents that the laser from becoming a source of ignition in an atmosphere with risk of explosion caused by the presence of gas and dust.

The photoelectric sensors from the SM9000 series from Telco Sensors are equipped with a 316 stainless steel housing as well, allowing them to be used in environments with a greater challenge due to the presence of chemical substances. Other photoelectric sensors have a housing made of different types of plastics with different chemical resistances, which are explained in the table below.
Trapped key interlocks from Haake Technik provide a mechanical safety that is made of AISI 316 stainless steel. The remaining safety components such as safety bumpers and edges are, on request, available for your application!

Cables come in different shapes, sizes, connections and materials. There are types of cables made of PUR (polyurethane) and TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), each of which has its own chemical resistance.
