Sensor Partners offers a wide range of Telco Sensors light grids . The light grids from Telco Sensors are known for their robustness and reliability. The two terms; light grids and light curtains are often used interchangeably. In general, in the access technology the name light grid is used and in the mechanical engineering the term light curtain is used. Both have the same definition: an emitter on one side and a receiver on the other side with a web of infrared beams in between. Within the product range of Telco Sensors there are two series of light grids:
- SpaceGuard
- SpaceScan
Below, we will describe these series and assess in which applications the differrent light grids can be deployed.
The SpaceGuard series
The entire SpaceGuard series, with exception of the SpaceGuard SG 11 is resistent against external light sources and are working standalone. The patented AST-system ensures that the light grids asjusts the sensitivity automatically to the environment to guarantee an optimal measurement or detection. Think here of environmental conditions such as pollution, smoke or condensation. The inputs and outputs of the emitter and receiver are secured.
- Works standalone;
- A voltage range of 10 - 36 Vdc;
- Resistent against external light sources up to 10000 lux;
- Patented resistency against pollution, smoke, condensation, etc.;
- Inputs have reversed polarity protection;
- Outputs are protected against short circuit and inductive loads.
SpaceGuard SG 1

The SG1 is a light grids series with a wide range of applications. The light grids are available in a water resistent IP67 housing to be used in applications where moist-. water- and dust accumulation could cause problems for other light grids. This is the case in the sliding door of a bus where rain could be a hindering obstacle for many sensors, but not with the SG 1 light grids. The sensor looks through the layer of sawdust because of the so called excess gain which adjusts the strength of the signal to observed pollution.
The housings are available in different profile heights up to 2.1 m. The beam pattern and the resolution guarantee that the light grids have a big coverage within the detection area between the emitter and receiver. This ensures that also small objects that pass the light grids are detected. The SG1 light grids can be used in moving application such as in a moving door with a passage width up to 4 meter!
SpaceGuard SG2

The SG2 series from Telco Sensors is developed for usage in elevators. A familiar application for these light grids is the security of elevator doors. The light grids are, depending on the application, available in different types of housing an profile heights up to 2 meter.
For a versatile deployment, the sensor is provided with different kinds of outputs. So there is for example the special OSE-output that is used for the security of doors to stop these before it comes in contact with a person or object. An automatic synchronization ensures that emitter and receiver immediately start working after installation. For specific applications such as an elevator door with a so called skate there is a blanking-function to prevent false detections.
SpaceGuard SG10

For extreme applications there are the SG10 light grids from Telco. With a range from 10 to 14 meters it is able to be used in applications where emitter and receiver are placed far from each other such as big hangar doors. The robustness of these light grids continues with the precipitation filter which makes it possible to deploy the SG10 in outdoor applications where it is exposed to rain, snow and fog. The filter ensures that the signal unintentionally is triggered because of the weather conditions and reliable detection is thus guaranteed. Because of all these advantages the SG10 is suited for use in many access systems such as gates, fences, car lifts and barriers.
Think for example of stacked wooden plates or metal beams on a pallet which are transported on a conveyor. A singl misplaced beam or plate can cause delay in the entire production process. The light grid timely measures and detects the protruding and misplaced part of the pile. This way downtime can be reduced or entirely prevented.
SpaceGuard SG 10 Master/Slave

The SG 10 Master/Slave is the SG10 series with a master/slave-configuration. This way the emitter and receiver are attuned to each other so interference from the outside is excluded. The receiver reacts only to signals which are coming from the emitter. This is especially convenient when other light sources are present that can trigger the light grid. This series excels in applications where people and objects such as vehicles should be detected when accessing sliding gates. The access security is then set up on the outside as well as on the inside of the gate. A person and/or object is then detected before as well as after passing the gate. This configuration additionally involves another particularity: the master, in this case the emitter, can function on its own without the need for a receiver.
SpaceGuard SG11

The SG11 are the most familiar light grids from Telco Sensors. The SG11 is in the elevator industry a known term because of the controller and a set of light grids that are provided with stereo plugs. They distinguish themselves from the SG2 due to the smaller beam spacing so the detection is more accurate. Furthermore the SG11 has a broad range of 4 meter. This light grid is fully utilized when it is equipped with the SGC amplifier. The amplifier offers many possibilities of which an automatic setting for the sensitivity. This setting makes sure that the light grids have the optimal sensitivity on the basis of for example environmental factors such as the presence of dirt in an application such as person detection at the roller door of a hall where animal food is stored. The accumulation of dust particles can attenuate the signal so that this has to be asjusted. That is where this function comes into its own.
The setting can be served manually with a potentiometer. For the broad deployment in different applications, the light grid has different outputs. Together with the outputs there is also a time-out functions that is important for muting the detection of objects which are permanently present in the field of view of the light grid. Think for example the skate in an elevator door.
For preventive maintenance, the light grid is provided with an internal recognition of mistakes such as cable fractures, electrical disruptions and false operation of the emitter and receiver. In case of any of these mistakes these are showed with an indicator. Here, the problems are fixed on time and costs are saved in time and money.
SpaceGuard SG13

The SpaceGuard SG 13 is a light grid with new housing, namely the E- and the G- housings. The E-housing features a distinction of 28.7 x 14.7 mm and a mounting in the conduction of the door. Think of using as a door security in doors with relatively less built-in space, such as sectional doors with a more compact guide rail. For more information about the different types of housings this can be read at the end of this article in the table.
The SG13 series is available in heights of 848 mm up to 2648 mm. These light grids are versatile. An example of an application is in a cool or freezing environment. Here the light grid is placed before the door. The detection of people, vehicles or objects are observed in front of the door.
Another application is the use at a senctional door. The SG13 can be mounted in the guide rail of the door. The dynamic blanking makes the difference here. This implies that, during the descending of the door, the beams are interrupted consequently from the top down so that a safe closure can be guaranteed. The function makes sure that the system distinguishes between the closing door and an object or person.
SpaceGuard SG15

The SpaceGuard SG15 is a special light grid that is provided with a TÜV-certification. This means that it can be used as a safety system on its own. Other access systems such as an underflow profile should first hit a person, vehicle or object before the door comes to a stop. The SG15 stops the door with a detection, before the door has made contact with the person, the vehicle or the object.
It is also possible with the SG15 to choose between multiple outputs, such as an OSE-output or a relais. The OSE-output is, as mentioned before, an output that especially functions as safety output for light grids. This output carries out a test automatically before the door closes.
Since this light grid is meant for use on the industrial doors and this grid is available in a height of 1.93 m, 2.29 m and 2.65 m. Doors higher than 2.5 m thus only need to be actively secured up to the height of 2.5 m. Therefore the light grid of 2.5 m. is ideal for securing a door of this scope.
SpaceGuard SG25

SpaceGuard SG25 is, on the contrary to light grids with a single output, provided with a measuring function. This function, called pulse-strainoutput, makes it possible to carry out a contour measurement of passing objects which can be seen in the image.
An excellent application in which the SG25 can be well used is in a carwash where it does not determines the presence of a vehicle, but also the contours. Because of this information the brushes as well as the car can be well positioned during a wash in the carwash
SpaceGuard SGP30

The SGP 30 light grids is provided with a mounting rail and can be used without reflector or receiver. This is because the SGO 30 is housed as a diffuse proximity light grids that detects objects via the received reflection. Due to the different available types of housings and a control-input the SGP 30 is very versatile.
A diffuse proximity especially excels in applications with a limited space such as in a sawing,- sanding,- or packaging machine. An example of an application is the detection of boxes on a conveyor which transports these to packaging machine.
The SpaceScan series
Where the SpaceGuard series are especially suited for the access technology, the SpaceScan series are mainly used in the automation of industrial processes. From simple object detection to complex measurements these light grids can be deployed. Besides the versatility these light grids feature a robustness against the most challenging environmental factors.
The SpaceScan SS01

The SS01 series from Telco Sensors is a series of light grids for detection applications within the industrial automation. Suited for use in dirty and wet environments. The light grids are provided with a strong aluminium profile so they can resist a lot in applications such as the detection of products on a conveyor. The light grids can be deployed in a lot applications due to the different profile heights up to 1980 mm. For the diffuclties that can arise in detection or measuring applications there are several resolution and outputs available to solve these issues.
In case any objects are ending up in area of sight of the light grids undesirably, it is possible ignore this signal using a blanking. Using a seconde control-input on the SSR this blanking can be activated for 5 seconds. An example of this is the detection cardboard boxes on a conveyor where it could occur that a torn off flap can cause a false detection. The blanking ensures that these are ignored.
The advanced automated sensitivity adjustment ensures that no on-site installation or adaptations are required, the light grid is thus plug&play.
The SS01 is especially developed for static application where dirt could accumulate or a well executed alignment is crucial. Think here of measuring or detecting a tree trunk on a conveyor in a sawmill. The sawdust can accumulate which causes a reliable detection to be more difficult. The use of the SS01 here is because of the automatically adjustable signal strength per channel. When the signal is weakened because of accumulated dirt it is automatically increased with this function. In the same way, the strength is adjusted to get the right alignment of the emitter and receiver. This way the light grid will always function optimally.
The SpaceScan SS02

The SS02 series is a very advanced light grid that supports a wide scale of geometric analyse functions, which can be used for measuring-, positioning- and surveillance functions. Think here about the detection of boreholes in metal sheets in the metal industry or about the horizontal and/or vertical measurement of boxes on a conveyor in the packaging industry which can be in the image. Also in the textile industry these light grids help with the edge guiding of fabrics which are added by a textile feeder.
The light grids can be configured in such a way via the PC that they fit perfectly within the desired application. On the PC it is also possible to read out the measured values in real-time. Furthermore the SS02 offers the possibility to use analog outputs as well as digital switching outputs. After setting up there is also the possibility to control the configuration with a test-input. To be certain that all works well in an application there is also a synchronization-function which calibrated the emitter and receiver. This way, the SS02 can be excellently adapted to the application!
