Headroom measuring systems

According to the Tunnel Act, the clearance height of trucks may be a maximum of 4 meters. An additional permit must be obtained from the RDW for trucks between 4 and 4.25 meters high. It is important for the driver to know the exact height of his truck before leaving the yard.

11,000 tunnel closures per year

More than 11,000 tunnel closures are recorded annually, with tens of millions of euros in damages. The average damage to infrastructure in a tunnel incident is €22,000, while economic losses due to closures and traffic jams reach €135,000. This does not include damage to own equipment. These costs are often recovered from the entrepreneur.

Clearance height control with sensors

To address this problem, a height measurement system is placed at the exit of a yard that takes height measurements of vehicles and loads. With sensors, the height is measured and communicated directly to the driver. This makes it possible to determine whether an exemption is needed. If the truck is lower than 4 meters, a barrier opens for departure to the customer. If the vehicle or load is higher, the driver automatically receives a notification to take action.

Traditionally, drivers often determine the height of cargo themselves with a tape measure or measuring stick, which can be dangerous. The risk of injury or damage is reduced by reliable height measurement systems. These can be integrated into fixed or mobile setups and provide accurate measurements of vehicles and loads.
